Lovecraft was a writer of horror and fantasy stories who, although a frequent contributor to the American pulp and weird fiction periodicals, never managed to support himself by his writing. His claim to fame was the development of what has since been recognized as a style of horror story based on slime and decay (as opposed to blood and guts). This story is a more typical one (you might even consider it Poe like).
